More Maui Meteorological Mayhem

1/24/2006 by Pete Jalbert

Just a follow up on yesterday's snow on Haleakala. There has been snow falling on the Hawaiian Island's High Volcanos over the last 3-4 days. There have even been some flurries on Haleakala. However, the white stuff on the top of Haleakala that appeared to be snow from sea level was actually hail. An unsettled atmosphere produced another relative rarity in the form of a thunderstorm. The thunderstorm produced about a half inch of hail enough to cover parts of the summit and to cause a little bit of chaos up at the National Park.

Haleakala Hail Storm leaves a White Summit

This picture from the front page of the summit was on the front page of today's Maui News. For more information on yesterday's hailstorm check out the article in today's paper.
