Volume 6 » page 2 ... Coconut Community Spotlight: PukalaniPukalani, which means hole in the Sky, is a small community of roughly 7,500 people that offers a lot to families as well as retirees. Much of this can be attributed to its affordability, location and climate. Pukalani Climate and LocationPukalani is nestled on the West flank of Haleakala at elevations ranging between 1,100 and 1,700 feet. This elevation results in a cooler climate and spectacular views for many of the area's homes. Pukalani's location on Haleakala shields it from much of the prevailing weather that comes to the island from the Northeast. This leaves the area more sun kissed than other parts of the Upcountry and cooler than the nearby Central Valley. The area offers a lot of convenience. It is a short commute to the airport and medical, legal and professional services of Central Maui. The beaches of the North Shore are 15 minutes away and the charming town of Makawao and its good dining, boutiques and galleries is a mere 5 minute drive. The Pukalani Town Center offers groceries, coffee shops, restaurants, banking and a hardware store giving Pukalani easier access to these necessities than any of the other Upcountry communities. As mentioned in the golf and golf course home articles, it is also the only Upcountry community with its own golf course. The Upcountry Pool and Hannibal Tavares Community Center is centrally located for swimming laps or a refreshing dip in the pool. New Development in PukalaniThe community of Pukalani is in the midst of a major expansion of commercial space. The new Kulamalu Shopping Center is going to be situated in the upper elevations of Pukalani across the street from the Kula 200 development. The town center is being designed with an eye towards pedestrian oriented shopping. Big storefront windows are made for window shopping while broad sidewalks and park benches add to the pedestrian amenities. Restaurants of different varieties will be interspersed with shops ranging from grocery store to gift shops. In addition to the shops, Kulamalu will be a learning center for the Upcountry. The new Kamehameha school is located just below the town center. The school will eventually accommodate over 1,100 students. In addition the the Kamehameha School, the Maui Astronomy Center will also be a focal point for the community. The Astronomy Center will support the observatories currently located on top of Haleakala Crater. The 15,000 square foot center will also help Maui attract future astronomy projects. In addition to the commercial aspects of the development, 12 custom homes are planned for Kulamalu hilltop. The small and exclusive subdivision will have views of the central isthmus of Maui and both the North and South Shores. Pukalani Homes for SalePukalani has a more suburban feel than the rest of the Maui Upcountry communities. Homes tend to be on 7,500 square foot to ½ acres lots with family friendly streets and neighborhoods abundant. Homes vary in shape, size and style from 60's and 70's ranch style homes, Polynesian style pole homes, Hawaii Plantation style to new construction featuring the latest and greatest amenities. A number of homes and residential condos are located around the Pukalani Golf Course and country club. For those who enjoy being on the golf course for its open space and/ or a passion for the sport, Pukalani offers the most affordable golf course living on Maui. Typically, golf course homes on Maui run from $900,000 up to some of the most expensive homes on the island. In Pukalani, residential condos on the golf course in communities like Liholani Golf Villas run from the upper 400's to low 500's. Homes in Pukalani Terrace and Pukalani Fairway Estates start in the 600's and run up into the 800's. More upscale recent developments in Pukalani include Kulamalu located on the South End of the Golf Course. Homes in this area are currently running in the 700's. If you want luxury and a little more room to roam, Kula 200 might be the development for you. Located at the highest elevation in Pukalani on the border of Kula, homes in this area are on 2 to 4 acre lots with prices running from the 900's to well over a million dollars.
