What do Sonoma, Napa, Santa Barbara and Maui have in common? It's obvious that the first three counties are some
of America's finest wine producing regions. What is Maui doing on that list? Believe it or not, Maui has had its
own little vineyard for the last 30 years. Tedeschi Vineyard is nestled on the slopes of Haleakala at an elevation
of 2,000 feet in Ulupalakua. I recently watched the movie Sideways with my new friend Shanna. She is pretty savvy
when it comes to wines. Spurred in part by this movie and a chance to take a drive into the Upcountry as the Jacarandas
are coming into bloom, we decided to take a trip up to Ulupalakua Ranch and Tedeschi's tasting room.
The drive in and of itself is a highlight. As we wound our way up from the Central Valley, the signs of spring
were in the air. Trees and flowers were blooming on the side of the road and Jacarandas were just starting to show
their bursts of purple flowers. The rolling fields and meadows were the verdant green of spring time on Maui. The
views of course were amazing. The Pacific was shining golden in the late afternoon light. The islands of Lanai and
Kahoolawe stood out in the shimmering waters. For Shanna it was her first time to this part of this part of the
Upcountry. She was blown away from the views. For me, the drive was a great reminder of how lucky I am to live on
Maui. The road begins to really twist and turn as you pass through Kula and get closer to Ulupalakua. Just as the
winding road began to take its toll on our respective stomachs, we came to the towering grove of Eucalyptus that
meant we had arrived at the ranch.
The tasting room and the Ulupalakua Ranch are located in some of the most historic buildings on island. The tasting
room itself is housed in King's cottage. The cottage was built for King Kalakaua in 1874. Ulupalakua was a favorite
retreat throughout his monarchy. It is only appropriate that is now used for wine tasting as the king was known
for an impressive thirst for champagne. This thirst for champagne and his legendary poker game contributed to his
nickname as the "Merrie" monarch.
There was quite a line to sample the Vineyards assorted variety of wines. A bit daunted by the lack of elbow
room, we took the time to explore the King's Cottage and read about some of the history and ecology associated with
Ulupalakua. After perusing the gift shop, the throngs had cleared a bit, and we were able to mosey up to the tasting
room's beautiful 18 foot long Mango Wood bar cut from the trunk of a single tree. Shanna gave me a brief refresher
on the finer elements of wine tasting. Supplemented by my observations from Sideways, I was ready to taste my first
Tedeschi variety of wine. Shanna and I swirled our wines and then stuck our beaks into our glasses to take in the
full variety of aromas. Shanna was quick to describe a variety of scents to her. I was hard pressed to say much
beyond it smelled like wine. I quickly fell into the roll of the wine aficionado's ignorant sidekick. We repeated
the process sampling a variety of blancs, a sparkling wine, a red and the Tedeschi's signature pineapple wine. While
Tedeschi has yet to receive the acclaim of mainland wineries, it offers varieties of wines that most vineyards are
incapable of producing. Let's see if Coppola could ever produce a pineapple passion fruit wine!
After our tasting, we took a few minutes to stroll the beautiful grounds surrounding the cottage. A number of
historic buildings are accessible via a series of pathways. These buildings are remnants from the old Rose plantation.
At one time, this was one of Maui's most prolific sugar plantations. Century old trees dot the property making for
shaded pathways and a tranquil setting. After we had our fill, we made our way across the road to the Ulupalakua
General Store. The store is another quaint turn of the century building. Having sampled our share of wine, we cleansed
our palate with a few of the locally made teas in the store. Shanna and I were probably the last people in the store
for the day so they were eager to share the last samples. The store is a great place to pick up a picnic lunch.
The grounds around the tasting room make are a popular place for a mid day picnic.
As the sun began to sink lower in the sky, we reluctantly started our drive back to the North Shore. The setting
sun illuminated the clouds and set Haleakala aglow. Green pastures bathed in a golden light floated by the car windows.
We both had big smiles on our faces as we savored our excursion into the unique beauty of Maui's Upcountry.
The Tedeschi Vineyard tasting room is open seven days a week from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Free guided tours
of the winery are offered at 10:30 and 1:30 PM. No Reservations are required. If you are looking for an excuse to
check out the Tasting Room and the beautiful ground of the Vineyards, Check out the Ulupalakua Thing held on the
30th of April. This tradeshow is a showcase for Maui's agricultural community and food manufacturers. Samples of
Maui Grown produce, flowers, and assorted food stuffs abound. The beef and salad tasting are both big draws as are
the floral and cooking contests. Tickets are $20.00 for adults at the door with children under 10 admitted for free.
