I feel like this blog post is a day late considering that yesterday was cyber Monday. That being said, I know I am not the only procrastinator when it comes to holiday shopping. If you like food and you appreciate the mix of cultures in Hawaii, I would like to bring your attention to a phenomenal cook book recently published by the Paia Youth and Cultural Center.
Our Hanai Plate is a collection of recipes from the various cultures that have migrated to this beautiful island chain in the center of the Pacific. The book is divided into chapters on Polynesian Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, Puerto Rican, Korean, Filipino, European Explorers and Paniolo Cowboy recipes. The result is an assortment of delectable dishes including Haupia, Sopapillas, Musubi, Portuguese Bean Shop, Empanadas, Chicken Papaya and Korean Grilled Beef. Not only are there a lot of good recipes, but it is an extremely well done book put together by the staff and kids of PYCC. The best part yet is that a portion of the sales benefit the cooking program at the Youth and Cultural Center. You can order Our Hanai Plate online. It would make a great present for those that crave the varied tastes of Hawaii.
