Whenever I am visiting a new city, I like to pick up the local independent newspaper. I find that it gives a good unfiltered perspective on what is happening in a community. The Maui Time Weekly does an admirable job of filling this role in Maui. One issue that I always look forward to seeing is the Best of Maui edition. This issue hit the stands last Wednesday. The issue features reader opinions on their favorites on a variety of subjects ranging from food to beaches to politics to shops and a whole lot more. It is always interesting to see what is selected as a local favorites. I can’t say I agree with all the picks and the editorial staff lets it be known when they see a puzzling pick. That being said, I think that is half the fun of this week’s issue. For island newcomers, this can be a great way to learn about island hot spots. You can pick up the free paper at news stands all over the island or you can check it out online.
