June is moving along quickly. We already at the Fourth Friday of the month and that means another fun Paia Town Party. This month’s Fourth Friday theme is the Summer of Love. I think that is pretty appropriate for a town that still has one foot back in the sixties! There will be music, a summer of love fashion show and specials among the town’s merchants. Here is a run down on some of the Fourth Friday events.
Paia Restaurants.
- Johhny B’s (65 Hana Hwy) looks like it will be an epicenter for this month’s Fourth Friday. They will be hosting a dj, the fashion show and live music. They will also be giving free samples of their Maui beef burgers. The Paia Youth and Cultural Center’s DJ Cosmic will be spinning tunes from 6:00-7:00 PM.The fashion show starts at 7:30 PM. The Summer of Love fashion show will be featuring looks from Nuage Bleu, Biasa Rose, and Imrie and hair by Vanity Salon. Stick around for live music from 8:00-9:00 from Matt Lane and friends.
- Paia Bay Café (137 Hana Hwy) Simmer Street – rock and soul grooves by Klaus Simmer, Bob Street, and Jeff Ellison – will be performing in the courtyard from 6:00-8:00 PM.
- Flatbread (89 Hana Hwy) is hosting Maui County’s Junior Lifeguards for a special fundraiser. Come support those learning how to keep us safe in the water!

- Maui Crafts Guild (69 Hana Hwy) What do you call a mushroom that likes to party? …..a FUNGI! Maui woodworker Cole Warren will be exhibiting his work as part of Fourth Friday festivities. Refreshments and live music by Upcountry Celtic will round out a fun night.Cole’s exhibition will feature works made with spalted Maui woods. “Spalting” is any form of wood coloration caused by fungi. Although primarily found in dead trees spalting can also occur under stressed conditions, even in living trees. “You never know how amazing the spalting is until you cut into the wood”, says Cole. “It’s like opening a box of chocolates!” For this show Cole has created inspirational wood turnings, utensils, desk accessories, and tables from Maui’s woods that tend to spalt. Come and feast your senses in Paia on this special evening!
- Maui Hands (84 Hana Hwy) is featuring watercolorist Amanda Scott who will be painting portraits. The gallery is also offering 10% off Chad Durgan’s mix-metal jewelry just for Fourth Friday!

Fourth Friday runs officially from 6:00-9:00PM. As you can see by the schedule above this month’s festivities will likely run a little later. Arrive early as parking is often tough. You can use the guide below to identify potential parking places.
The Maui Film Festival gets underway in just a couple of hours. This premier cultural event is in it’s thirteenth year with movies and parties scheduled for both Wailea and The Maui Arts and Cultural Center. Here are some of the highlights for the festival.
- The event kicks off with the Opening Night Twilight Reception at Capische? Restaurant at the Hotel Wailea. If you waited until tonight to buy tickets, you waited too long. This event is sold out!
- Opening Night at The Celestial Cinema is always a fun place to be. You would be hard pressed to find a more scenic venue to watch a movie than under the stars on the Golf Course in Wailea. Opening night includes a Celebrity Tribute to Actor/Producer/Director Josh Radnor. After Josh receives his award, the festival will be featuring a movie directed by Josh entitled Liberal Arts. The second movie of the night is Big Easy Express which chronicles three bands, six cities and one train. Tickets for the Celestial Cinema are $22 and cover both features. The celebrity tribute starts at 8:00 PM. Arrive early, bring a blanket and enjoy the Sunset. The Celestial Cinema is held every night between now and Sunday with actor and film maker awards scheduled prior to the movies.
- The Taste of Chocolate is a Chocolate Lover’s Dream. This two hour celebration of all things chocolate is hosted at the Four Seasons Resort Wailea. There are six stations where chocolate is served in a whole variety of manners including a chocolate fountain. The Taste runs from 10:00PM-12:00AM on Friday night with tickets costing $125.
- The Taste of Wailea is one of the premier culinary events on the island. Located outside at the David Leadbetter Golf Academy, the Taste will include menu items from 12 different Wailea Restaurants. The event runs from 4:30-7:00 on Saturday. Tickets are $120 per person.
- If you are looking for something fun and inexpensive to do with Dad on Sunday night, you may want to consider The Sanddance Theater. The film festival will be showing a free movie down on Wailea Beach between the Four Seasons and The Grand Wailea. Its hard to beat the movies with the sound of surf crashing in the background.
These are just some of the things scheduled as part of The Maui Film Festival. There is also a full schedule of movies set for the Castle Theater at the MACC, film maker panel discussions and other great parties. The Kapalua Wine and Food Festival is underway this weekend. This is the 31st edition of the event, and it has been drawing big crowds. Most of the tastings, and dinners have been sold out over the last couple of days. That being said, there are still tickets available for some of tomorrow’s festival events around the Kapalua Resort. As of now, there are tickets for the Spanish Wine Tasting, the Wine Tour and the Seafood Festival.
Fantastic events like the Wine and Food Festival are just part of what makes Kapalua a world class resort. Kapalua is renowned for its golfing and beautiful beaches. The PGA tour kicks off every January at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. Kapalua Bay was the original winner of Dr. Beach’s annual Best Beach Award. Flemming Beach Park in Kapalua was another winner of this annual award. Other amenities include a coastal walking trail, fine restaurants and the Kapalua Spa. Paia’s monthly town party Fourth Friday is scheduled for tonight. The town will be highlighting the talents of local artist with an Art Out theme. Visit each gallery for a chance to win fantastic art made by our exhibiting artists – you’ll have a card (available at each gallery) signed at each location, and we’ll have a drawing the next day to find the lucky winner of some beautiful artwork. Remember to grab a card and have it signed at each gallery/art opening to be entered to win fantastic prizes. In addition to the local artists on display, there will be the usual assortment of Fourth Friday musical entertainment, events and activities. Here is a list of some of the attractions happening around Paia tonight.
- Maui Crafts Guild – 69 Hana Hwy (579-9697) Gyotaku artist Carrie Brady will be the featured artist at the Maui Crafts Guild from May 25 until June 21, 2012. You can meet the artist during her opening reception from 6:30 to 9 PM on Friday May 25. Refreshments and live music by Upcountry Celtic will be part of the festivities at the store in conjunction with Paia Town’s Fourth Friday celebration. “Woman in the Window Series 2? will be the featured entertainment for Carrie’s opening event. Gyotaku is the age old practice of applying inks to the side of fish and pressing them with paper to render unique prints that record the actual size and shape of the specimen fish. Practice and experimentation led Carrie to the development of her own unique style of gyotaku.
- Lumeria Yoga – 161 Hana Hwy – Stop by to see the photographic work by our visiting teacher. Music and fun surround his beautiful photographs taken all over the world.
- Maui Hands – 84 Hana Hwy (579-9245) : Amanda Scott will be demonstrating her water color paintings featuring the varied peoples of Hawaii. She will also be available to do sketches, as visitors come in and explore the gallery. Nathan Belmont will be demonstrating the etching process onto glass, as well as show casing many of his lampwork glass marine life figures. Maui Hands will have light refreshments.
- Paia Contemporary Gallery – 83 Hana Hwy (579-8444) Al Schwartz will be introducing his work, and available to talk to any clients or visitors about his process.He’s locally based, and works with fascinating mediums, including Maui earth and minerals that he adds to his paintings. He will be in the gallery from 6-8pm, to meet and greet!
- Turnbull Fine Art – 137 Hana Hwy (579-9385) Our gallery artists will showcase a live model sculpting and painting demonstration in our courtyard. We’re setting up a canvas for you to try your hand at painting during timed increments. A live latin guitarist will accompany our creativity.
- Simply 808 – 149 Hana Hwy –We are hosting ADI, a creative henna artist and designer that is recognized for her Polynesian artwork on clothing and the body. Born and raised here in Maui, come by to see her you can see her demonstrate her work at Simply 808.
- Indigo – 149 Hana Hwy (579-9199) Be one of the first people to get a signed copy of Daniel Sullivan’s book “Tribes of the Omo Valley”, a collection of photos, stories, and music documented during Daniel’s trip to Ethiopia. Indigo is also hosting talented sculptor Tim Garcia who will be displaying his wood creations and will be on hand to talk story
- Paia Tattoo Parlor – 120 Hana Hwy (upstairs) (579-8515) Exhibiting tattoo related artwork and paintings from our in house artists: Tania Arens, Nick Alvarez, William Crandall, Leah Honma, Cissy Lala, Nate Rose, Nancy Valerio, and Justin Yates. In lieu of any sort of “live demonstration” we will be offering a special discounted rate on tattoos for that night only (which i guess, in a sense, is exactly a live demonstration).
- Café Mambo – 30 Baldwin Ave (579-8021) Angi Walsh and Alana Shevling are showcasing their art at Café Mambo. It’s fantastic work created by the friendly faces that serve you there every day.
- PAIA EVENING OF UKULELE 4th Friday Event-FREE @ 149 Hana Hwy 6:30-10 PM Na Hoku Hanohano Nominee & Mountain Apple Recording Artist: CJ Boom Helekahi, Na Hoku Hanohano Award Winners -Hula Honeys and Master Ukulele Artist-Benny Uyetake and Ukulele students from Kalama School! Bounty Music the largest Ukulele selection in the world will also be part of the event!

They will sampling their 100% Maui Red Catuai Coffee inside Mana Foods, 49 Baldwin Avenue, during Paia’s Fourth Friday celebration. Pekelo specializes in 100% Maui Red Catuai, 100% Kona Peaberry and Prime beans.

The Maui Real Estate Team is proud to be sponsoring the Butterfly Effect Maui. This is the events sixth year after being started on Maui in 2007. The event is a non-competitive gathering celebrating community and love of the ocean, while instilling confidence in women of all ages and skill sets.
The festivities for the Butterfly Effect start tonight at the Flatbread Company in Paia at 5:00 PM. Tonight’s activities include an opening ceremony and silent auction benefiting The Surfrider Foundation Maui. The fun starts on Saturday at 9:00 AM with a beach clean up at Baldwin Beach Park. At 10:00, event participants will have an ocean safety briefing and group yoga. At 11:00, participants will do a three mile down wind paddle from Baldwin to Kanaha Beach Park. There will then be a second beach cleanup at Kanaha. At 6:00 PM, Thee Salon in Paia will host a fashion show event for The Butterfly Effect. At 9:00 PM, there will be an after party at Charley’s. Interested participants may still sign up at Paia Bay Coffee Company and Neil Pryde in Kahului.
It has been exciting to watch this event grow from a small gathering of women celebrating their love of ocean to a worldwide phenomenon. There are water and snow related Butterfly Effects being held around the globe from Sweden to Fiji to the Dominican Republic. Congrats to Tatiana Howard and the rest of the organizers. The Maui Film Festival is always something to look forward to on the calendar. The thirteenth edition of the Film Festival is scheduled from June 13th through the 17th in Wailea and the Castle Theater at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center in Kahului. This event brings a mixture of independent, documentary, and the occasional big studio production to some great Maui venues. The Celestial Cinema is held nightly under the stars on the Wailea Emerald and Gold Golf Courses. It is one of the more picturesque places to watch a film on the planet. The Castle Theater is a world class venue with top of the line visuals and acoustics. In addition to the scheduled movies, the Maui Film Festival also includes fun parties, film maker panels and celebrity tributes.
As we get closer to the event, the Film Festival has released a partial list of scheduled films. They have also announced that Elizabeth Banks will be one of this year’s festival nominees.
