Hana Scenery

Looking at our blog of late, there have been more pictures of graphs than Maui scenery. This weekend, Billy and I were out in Hana with the family. With few places more photogenic than Hana, I thought this might be a good time to add some color to the blog.

The weekend weather was actually pretty stormy. Gusty trade winds brought intermittent showers and whipped up the seas on east facing coastlines. It made for some dramatic scenery when waves met the rugged Hana coastline.

The waves were even bigger by Monday morning creating truly dramatic seas.

The showers held off on Monday for our visit to the Kipahulu section of Haleakala National Park. The “seven sacred pools” were closed due to high waters, but it was a great day to hike the Pipiwai trail!

I love doing the full loop around Haleakala when visiting Maui. It shows you the full gamut of Maui climate zones. Here we are entering the drier zones past Kaupo looking towards the rainy areas of East Maui.

The backside of Haleakala makes for truly dramatic scenery.

West Maui Mountains in all Their Splendor

Winter weather means that the trade winds are less prevalent. That also means the West Maui Mountains and Haleakala are more apt to be clear of clouds. Here are two different shots of the West Maui Mountains taken from Hookipa and Spreckelsville this week.

Just a little bit of Maui beauty to share with our blog readers on the mainland!

More Photos of Our Beautiful Acreage For Sale in Kula

Last week, Billy did some hiking around our Upper Kula Acreage listing last week. He had stunning weather with crystal clear skies when he was on this 35.98 acre parcel of land. Here are some view pictures from his visit.

The North and South Shores of Maui are visible from the property.

Here is a great shot of the North Shore and the North End of the West Maui Mountains. The mountains of Molokai are visible over the top of the West Maui Mountains.

Here is a view of South Maui and the South side of the West Maui Mountains. Lanai is visible in the distance.

When the trade winds blow, the tops of the West Maui Mountains are often cloaked in clouds. When light wind conditions more typical of fall and winter occur, you get stunning views like this one.

The views are stunning, but the landscape itself has it’s own beauty.

This property offers great potential as a quiet Upcountry getaway, small organic farm or a legacy estate. There are two water meters and multiple building sites. The end of the road location and surrounding Haleakala Ranch land makes create tremendous privacy. This property is offered for $2,495,000. This property sold! Another Beautiful Weekend on Maui

It was another beautiful weekend on Maui. It felt like the weekend kicked off a little earlier than usual with the county fair starting on Thursday. The weather was great and we basked under the glow of a full moon on Saturday. Here are some pictures that Billy and I snapped this weekend from around the island.

Photos from Haleakala National Park

I had a great overnight camping trip up in Haleakala National Park on Friday night. After pitching a tent in Hosmer’s Grove just inside the park’s entrance, we headed up to the summit to take in the crater views and the sunset. It had been quite a while since I had been up to the summit. I immediately regretted my extended absence. The vistas of the crater, the surrounding islands and of Maui itself make this one of the more stunning locales on the planet. The skies also managed to put on quite a show. We were treated to a fiery sunset. As the last of the sunset colors faded, the night skies began to shimmer with stars.

After a great night of sleep in the crisp mountain air, we awoke early in the morning for a quick hike on the Halema’u’u trailhead. This took us to an overlook of the crater and the Koolau Gap on the North side of the dormant volcano. Out timing was good as the crater and gap views were shrouded in clouds not long after we arrived. A little more than an hour after finishing our hike, we were back down at sea level in Paia. The air felt warmer than usual compared to the crisp, cool summit air. It is hard to imagine such a diversity of climates in close proximity. It is truly a testament to the diversity of environments in Maui.

Waihee Ridge Trail

Sunday, I had the opportunity to hike the Waihee Ridge Trail. This steep trail in the West Maui mountains is one of the better hikes on the island offering scenic vistas of Waihee Valley, The Pacific, North Shore, Central Maui and Haleakala. After quite a few stats posts of late, I thought a little Maui scenery would be a welcome change.

The trail gains 1560 feet of elevation over 2.6 miles so it is a bit of a thigh burner. Good footwear is advised as the trail can be pretty slick as you gain elevation. I have had a few friends say they had a tough time finding the trail. It is seven miles north of Wailuku on the Kahekili Highway. Look out for a sign saying Camp Maluhia BSA. The turn is across from the Mendes Ranch.
