The Maui Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a workshop on vacation rentals this Saturday at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. The focus of the workshop will be how we manage vacation rentals as a segment of the Maui economy. What types of rentals are wanted and how should they be regulated.Vacation rentals have been the subject of considerable debate on island after the mayor started cracking down on non-permitted rentals outside of the resort areas of the island. These rentals started to flourish over the last ten years as visitors demanded non-traditional accommodations. Chamber of commerce president Pamela Tumpap said the concept of a workshop came from a suggestion through County Council Member Gladys Baisa. Baisa is the chairwoman of the county council planning committee. The committee will be reviewing a series of vacation rental bills next week.
Space for the workshop is limited. Those that are interested in participating should contact the chamber of commerce at 871-7711.
