Dr. Beach Gives Maui more Accolades

Dr. Beach or Steven Leatherman of Florida International University released his annual Memorial Day Top Ten Beach Rankings. Two Maui Beaches made the list. DT Fleming at Honokohau Beach in the Kapalua Area came in at #5. Hamoa Beach in Hana came in at the tenth position. Both beaches are beautiful spots. Hamoa’s setting and black and white salt and pepper beach make it my favorite beach on the island. The beaches are judged on criteria such as windy/calm, smelliness/freshness, temperature, safety and cleanliness. With the quality of the beaches on Maui, it is somewhat surprising that only two made the top ten. That being said, it must be kept in mind that the winner of the best beach award is retired from the contest. Maui County boasts four previous winners. Kapalua Beach won the award in 1991. Hulupoe Beach on Lanai won the award in 1997. Wailea Beach won in 1999, and Kaanapali Beach was the 2003 award winner.
