Halloween on Maui
Halloween is a pretty big holiday on Maui. It seems like the island community tends to be get pretty spirited and is not afraid to dress up. For many years, people from throughout Hawaii, the West Coast and abroad came to Maui for Halloween celebrations on Lahaina’s Front Street. Tens of thousands would show up for what was known as the Mardi Gras of the Pacific. After a couple of particularly rowdy years, the county put the brakes on Lahaina Halloween Celebrations. While people still came to Front Street, numbers were down and the event was no longer officially sanctioned. After a couple year hiatus, “Front is Back” with the full support of the county.
The county will start closing Front Street and some of the adjoining roads to vehicular traffic around 3:30 PM today. The Keiki or kids parade will be held at 4:30. Adult costume contests are scheduled from 7:00-9:00PM. There will be plenty of live music and good times at the various Front Street Bars and Restaurants. To help keep the highways safe, the county is offering public transportation to Lahaina via Kihei, Wailuku, Ka’anapali and Napili.
When Lahaina Halloween was de-emphasized, Paia town became a popular locale for Halloween celebrations. This year, Paia is still offering some fun events for kids, while the adult portion of the evening may be a little more subdued. Local businesses will be offering trick or treating from 5:00-7:00PM today. Flatbread will be having a keiki costume contest. Charley’s is hosting music tonight, but the word is that tickets have already sold out! Moana Cafe will be having a DJ tonight as well.
Regardless of where you decide to go, I hope everyone has a safe and fun Halloween!
