Seclusion

Peace, quiet and limited amenities

You can’t get much more secluded than Hana. Located on the island’s Eastern tip, it is accessible via the world-renowned Road to Hana. It is approximately a 31-mile drive from Paia, but that 31 miles crosses over 50 one-lane bridges and more twists and turns to count. There is also a small airport in Hana with two commercial flights in and out daily, depending on the weather. The town is small with limited amenities outside its extraordinary natural beauty. For most residents, seclusion and quiet are features and not bugs. That said, that also means Hana is not for everyone. If you need lots of shopping, nightlife, or an abundance of amenities, Hana is probably not the place for you.

Weather

Lush, tropical Hana

Hana is located in Windward Maui with rainfall in Hana town averaging between 60-100 inches annually. Like the rest of Maui, Hana is a land of microclimates, particularly when compared to the broader East Maui area. Places like Keanae, Wailua, and Nahiku can receive more than 120 inches of rain annually. South of Hana, the weather transitions pretty dramatically once you leave the Kipahulu area and head into Kaupo. This secluded community on the backside of Hana is located on the edge of the leeward/windward boundary. It’s important to be mindful of differences in rainfall when shopping for a Hana home. Airflow is an important consideration in the wettest areas.

Outdoor activities

Hana connects you to nature

Few places on earth match the stunning natural beauty of Hana. Lush foliage, a dramatic coastline, and the steep east flank of Haleakala volcano create a dramatic backdrop for outdoor adventure and exploration. The beaches on the Hana side are both stunning and unusual. Waianapanapa State Park is home to Maui’s most iconic black sand beach. Kokee beach offers surfing along a red sand beach. Hamoa has a salt-and-pepper black and white sand mix, stunningly clear water, and a lush pastoral setting. If you like to stretch your legs, the Kipahulu section of Haleakala National Park has one of the best hikes on Maui, the Pipiwai Trail. The King’s trail offers a rugged hike along the coastline that you can explore out of Waianapanapa.

Housing Options

Finding Your Home in Hana

Hana typically has a more limited housing inventory as a smaller community. That said, it is also relatively diverse: modest homes on smaller lots in downtown Hana, oceanfront estates, farms, jungle shacks in Nahiku, and even oceanfront condos on Hana Bay. There is typically more inventory at higher price points than at the entry-level. In all but the hottest housing markets, homes tend to sit longer due to a smaller pool of buyers. Finding a Hana home for sale can take patience and a little compromise, two traits that will benefit you when living in this special town.
