Hau’oli La Hanau Ryder

Billy’s little boy Ryder celebrated his second birthday on Thursday and we celebrated last evening with a barbecue at Launiapoko on the west side. You couldn’t ask for a much better setting for the kids or the adults. Launiapoko has a small wading area ideal for kids. Surrounded by a rock jetty, the wading area is shallow and protected from any bigger waves. The barbecue area is grassy with palm trees swaying all around. The gentle waves that were breaking outside the jetty were ideal for the beginning surfers in our crew and for Dads to take their kids out on the nose of their longboards. Billy and I were able to take our stand up paddle boards out for a quick spin. The waves were gentle on us and the views while standing on your board were pretty fantastic. Rainbows formed intermitently in the Launiapoko Valley as trade showers soaked the west maui mountains. Small squalls bathed usually dry Kaho’olawe. Meanwhile, the evening sky was clear over our head. We had a beautiful sunset as we watched the sun sink into the Pacific between Lanai and Molokai lighting up the clouds on the horizon. The kids had a blast first in water and then on land as they broke open a Pinata and swarmed its contents. The parents enjoyed lots of good grilled chicken, salads and grilled corn. The smiles, laughter and tears were typical of a 2 year olds birthday. The setting was uniquely Maui. Happy Birthday Ryder! We all look forward to celebrating your many future birthdays.
