Canoes have always been an important part of Hawaiian Culture. The islands were first settled by Polynesians traveling via ocean going canoes. Their journeys between the islands near Tahiti to Hawaii are some of the greatest feats of navigation in prehistory. Today, the canoe culture is most evident in Hawaii’s many canoe clubs. These clubs hold races throughout much of the year. The races include both individual and team events. While competitive, the races can also be social events. The teams and the canoe culture is known for their sense of camaraderie and community. This past weekend, Billy’s wife Carla went down to the Kihei Canoe Club to watch our friend Tom compete. Here are some pictures from the event.
