Historic Home in Haiku
The Maui Real Estate Team just listed one of Maui’s oldest standing homes . Originally built in the 1870s, the original owner of the five bedroom, five bathroom home was a doctor for the Plantation. The home’s various owners restored and updated the structure throughout the years. It is extremely rare to see homes on Maui from this era still standing let alone offered for sale.
The Living Space of 555 Haiku Road
The home is entered via a spacious covered lanai. This is a beautiful perch to take in the property’s impressive grounds and enjoy the trade winds. From the lanai, you enter a large living area. The home’s high ceilings give the home a sense of grace spaciousness. A living room off the entry includes wall to ceiling glass windows and sliders that open to a large deck.
The kitchen of the home is well suited to hosting gatherings of friends and family with a large range and an oversized sink well suited to entertaining larger groups.
The five bedrooms in the home each have their own character. All five bedrooms also include ensuite bathrooms.
The home has many features and small details that you won’t find in new construction. Crystal door knobs, a clawfoot tub in one of the bathrooms, built-ins galore and custom woodwork that frames doorways are all quality touches.
The Grounds of 555 Haiku Road.
The Old Hawaii Style evident in the house is just as apparent as you stroll the grounds of this 1.2 acre property. A majestic mango tree, towering royal palms, numerous fruit trees and a small fish pond highlight the landscape. A barbecue gazebo is another good spot to enjoy the beautiful grounds.
This home is currently a very active bed and breakfast. In Maui County, Bed and Breakfasts licenses are not transferable. That said, it is possible for a future owner to apply for a new Bed and Breakfast license. Buyers interested in operating a bed and breakfast should do their due diligence with the county planning department.
555 Haiku Road is located within walking distance of the Haiku Town Center. There you will find popular local restaurants like Nuka and Colleens. There is also a yoga studio, fitness center, a small grocery store and other amenities. The property is less than ten minutes to Ho’okipa Beach Park. Paia town is about twelve minutes from the front door.
