The land use committee of the Maui County Council voted to recommend approval of the Honua’ula subdivision by a 6-2 vote. The project has been subject to months of debate and public testimony. The new 1400 unit development would be located above the Wailea resort and next to Maui Meadows subdivision. The project would also include commercial areas and a private golf course. The project would also allocate 700 of the 1400 units to affordable housing. The affordable housing and contributions to parks and other other community infrastructure were cited as primary reasons why council members voted in favor of the project. Council members who voted against the project cited an incomplete application, concerns over water and the overall lack of need for additional high end development on the island. This mirrors much of the public testimony that was opposed to the project. The project will go in front of the entire county council for a vote in early December. We will continue to follow the county council deliberations on the project on the Maui Real Estate Blog.
