Honua’ula Zoning Passes

Early this morning after months of public testimony and council deliberation, the Maui County Council passed the project district zoning changes that will enable the proposed Honua’ula development to move forward. The subdivision will include over 1400 units on 670 acres. The debate over Honua’ula has been passionate. Public testimony for the project cited the 700 affordable housing units that would be provided and the economic security it would provide for the local construction industry. Those that testified against the project were concerned about environmental impacts, over stretching infrastructure and cultural impacts. The developer was asked to make a number of concessions to move forward. That being said, they did so by a tight margin of five votes for the project and four votes against. We will continue to provide updates on Honua’ula on THE Maui Real Estate blog.
