Kihei is known for its fantastic beaches, and many condos in the area are either right on the beach or just across the street. Kihei has a wide variety of beaches, with different beaches suited to different activities. Beaches in South Kihei, like the Kamaole Beach Parks and Keawakapu, are known for great swimming and snorkeling. Sugar Beach in North Kihei is the longest beach on the island for beach walks. Living in this area means you’re always just a short walk or drive from some of Maui’s best beaches, making it an ideal place for beach lovers.
If you own a Kihei condo, there is more than just the beach to entertain you. Kihei has a wide variety of restaurants and a rapidly growing food truck scene. The triangle offers the island’s greatest concentration of nightlife. It has the Maui Nui golf club. The Kihei Aquatic Center is a fantastic place for swimming laps. Cove Park has oceanfront roller skating and a skate park for the young at heart. There is also more golf and dining just to minutes away in Wailea. Central Maui amenities, including shopping and assorted conveniences, the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, UH Maui College, and more, are 20-30 minutes away, depending on where you are in Kihei.
If you are coming to Maui to stay at your condo for a shorter period, you hope the weather will be sunny for all or most of your visit. If your condo is in Kihei, the odds are stacked in your favor. Kihei is in the rain shadow of Haleakala on the drier, leeward side of the island. Kihei has a desert climate with an average of 10-15 inches of rain annually. Most precipitation that falls tends to come during winter storms that pull up tropical moisture from the South. Typical Kihei weather is warm with breezy tradewinds.
Kihei has more condominium developments than any other community on Maui, providing a variety of options for buyers. There are entry-level condos targeted at island residents, high-end short-term rental condos, more modest short-term rentals, developments with hundreds of condos, and others with fewer than 20 units. It is important to note that not all Kihei condos permit short-term rentals. The county is currently reviewing a proposal to reduce the number of short-term rentals in Kihei. Contact us if you have questions about which condos allow short-term rentals.
The county of Maui currently permits selected apartment-zoned condominiums to legally vacation rent. A recent proposal by the mayor would phase out and repeal the right to do short-term rentals.
