Paniolo History

Makawao reflects its ranching roots

Makawao’s Paniolo culture is unique on Maui. Paniolo is the Hawaiian word for cowboy, and the area’s paniolo roots stem from the ranching activities that occurred in and nearby Makawao on the slopes of Haleakala. The community’s charming downtown served as the primary place for provisions for the ranching community. The Paniolo evidence is still evident today from the rodeo events at Oskie Rice arena and the hitching posts in front of the Rodeo general store.

Weather and Climate

Makwao's Pleasant Climate

The town of Makawao ranges from about 1,000 feet to 4,000 feet of elevation on the Northwest slope of Haleakala. It is in a transitional area between the wetter climate of windward Maui and the drier region of Maui’s Upcountry. This translates to warmer days and cooler nights with passing showers that come in via the tradewinds. Historically, downtown has averaged about 60 inches of rainfall annually, but recently, it has trended drier. Temperatures in the Olinda area above downtown are cooler due to its higher elevations, with winter nighttime temperatures in the 40s not uncommon. The area off Piiholo Road in Olinda tends to be wetter, with a Northern California feel with its crisp air. Hali’imaile, located at a lower elevation in Makawao, is drier and warmer than downtown Makawao.
