Makawao Rodeo

One of Maui’s great 4th of July traditions is the Makawao Rodeo. While most equate cowboys with the western U.S., Maui’s Upcountry also has its own cowboy culture. Abundant ranch land and a thriving cattle industry caused demand for cowboys or Paniolos as they are known in Hawaii. While you don’t see nearly as many cowboys sauntering through Makawao these days, Paniolos from all over the state descend on 4th of July weekend. The rodeo events are held at Oskie Rice Arena above Makawao in Olinda. Events will run all afternoon today and Sunday.
