Last week, the Maui County Planning commission gave its blessing to the Maluaka (Keaka) condominium project in Makena. Developer Everett Dowling received approval by a 5-2 vote. Maluaka Makena will have 69 condo units spread over 13 buildings on 14 acres. The project was lauded by some on the commission due to some of the green technologies being implemented. Most significant was the six stage drainage system to filter storm water. This is particularly important due to the project’s proximity to one of the better reef systems along this stretch of coast. Other green technologies such as the heavy use of photovoltaic solar cells would make Keaka the first condo project in the state to be designated as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified.
The two dissenting votes on the planning commission questioned both the location of the development and the need for additional high end development. The MauiRealEstate.com Blog will continue to provide new information on Maluaka Makena as it becomes available.
