There are a couple of earth day events happening on the island of Maui this weekend. The Maui Nui Botanical Garden in Kahului will be hosting an Earth Day Celebration today from 10:00 AM -3:00 PM. The theme to this year’s earth day at Maui Nui is conservation of water and other island resources. An article in yesterday’s Maui News talked about today’s event and how island residents might conserve by using native plants. Maui is eden like in that beautiful tropical plants from around the world can flourish. However, a number of ornamental plants used by island residents can require significant amounts of water. This is notable because of the aridity of many of Maui’s population centers. Well adapted native plants are beautiful and they can help with water conservation and ease of maintenance. Exterior water usage can be cut anywhere between 50 and 80% through the use of native plants. To this theme, native plants will be for sale at Maui Nui Botanical Gardens. Other events and activities at Maui Nui will include cultural demonstrations, Hawaiian music and information from various island conservation groups.
Sunday, there will be an earth day celebration at Baldwin Beach Park outside of Paia. The Maui Earth Day Festival will run from 10:00 AM to sunset. This fun family event will feature live music and performances all day, a host of environmental and social awareness booths and speakers, a variety of food booths, and a keiki fun and activities area. This is a free event, but donations will be welcomed.
