As mentioned in the blog a couple days ago, we are experiencing a somewhat unusual bout of extended high surf for this time of the year on the North Shore of Maui. Yesterday afternoon, we had a high surf warning announced meaning wave heights in excess of 25 feet were possible.
The surf peaked last night and the results of the high seas were evident when I went for a walk on the beach this morning. I found puddles of water from the high surf in the parking lot of Baby Beach. While the water was churned up close to shore, it looked like pretty good conditions for tow surfers riding the outer reefs. I counted at least 8 jet skis on the outer reef off of Spreckelsville. It is highly likely that Jaws was breaking today. When I went into Paia town, I could see sand had washed onto the basketball court at Paia Bay Beach Park. The High Surf Warning will likely continue through this evening with High Surf Advisories forecasted until Friday.
