If the word polo conjures images of the stuffy and super rich, take a drive up to Olinda this afternoon to see some Maui Polo. It is likely to change your perception of the sport. Maui Polo is heavily influenced by Maui’s Paniolo or Cowboy culture. Many of the cowboys who make a living tending the cattle of Maui’s Upcountry Ranches play at the matches. Today’s match is a tribute to former player and Ulupalakua Ranch legend Andrew Kauai being held at the Outdoor polo field, one mile up Olinda Road above Makawao town. The match starts at 1:30 followed by live music and dancing with the Silver Spurs. Tickets are $5 at the gate with kids getting in free.
If you are looking for things to do in Maui’s central valley. Today is the last day of the county fair. The event held at the fairgrounds at Kanaloa avenue runs through 11:00 PM tonight. Stop on by and enjoy the food, rides and exhibits!
