Pulelehua, Maui Land and Pineapple’s proposed development in West Maui went before the Maui County Planning Commision again this week. The 882 unit development has come under considerable scruitny. While it has been lauded for its design, the potential burden on West Maui infrastructure and its affordable housing component are cited as concerns. Members of the planning commision addressed those concerns by proposing that Maui Land and Pineapple fulfill additional obligations. Additional requirements discussed include:
- Increasing the affordable housing component from 50% to 65%
- Having Maui Land and Pine build a new sewage treatment facility
- Requiring the donation of an additional 50 acre public park
Maui Land and Pineapple officials expressed concern at the meeting that these additional requirements may make the development unfeasable for the company. Both county government and the Maui Land and Pineapple will both be reviewing the proposed requirements prior to a planning commision meeting to be held on June 13th. We will continue to monitor the negotations on Pulelehua.
