Over the last two days, the Maui News has featured headlines on two proposed developments. One of the developments has made headlines repeatedly throughout the last year, while the other development is making its first appearance on the front page of the Maui News.
Today’s paper had an article on the proposed Honua’ula development. The 670 acre 1400 unit development has been subject to considerable debate. One of the main criticisms of the project was that it relied upon an environmental impact statement from the 1980s when the project had a different scope. Some of the conditions that the county council added for the development to get approval triggered state statutes that necessitate an environmental review. Check out the article in the Maui News for additional details on the environmental review and the overall status of Honua’ula.
Monday’s Maui News featured a story on a new development proposed for Kula. Clayton Nishikawa is proposing a 116 unit senior housing project along lower Kula Road. The project would include 70 affordable housing units with the rest coming at market prices. Nishikawa faces a pretty substantial hurdle in that this area is not slated for development in the current drafts of the county’s new community plan. Check out the Maui News story for additional details.
We will continue to provide update on the Honua’ula debate and any new information on the proposed Kula development on THE Maui Real Estate blog.
