Yesterday’s Maui News included a story on a meeting sponsored by community groups to discuss new development in the South Maui area. The Honua’ula Development formerly know as Wailea 670 was subject to considerable criticism during the meeting. The approval process for the development has been covered in previous blog posts. The project which would feature 1400 housing units above Wailea and next to Maui Meadows had been making slow but steady progress towards approval with the Maui County Council. Debate on the property was suspended while council spent much of April and May deliberating next year’s budget. The debate is slated to reconvene in June. It appears that it will be faced with more organized opposition. Critics of the project cited concern over natural and cultural resources, water supply, traffic and insufficient affordable housing. While a representative of the developer attended the meeting, he did not speak. The Maui Real Estate Blog will continue to monitor the debate over this development.
