I had a couple of quick news updates on our little town of Paia along Maui’s North Shore. Traffic along Hana Highway can back up as you approach Paia town from Kahului. The problem can be particularly acute during our peak visitor seasons. The county worked with Alexander and Baldwin to help alleviate the problem a couple of years back. The end result was a mini-bypass that provided East bound traffic an alternate route that ended up on Baldwin Avenue above the post office. The mini by pass did help reduce the backups along Hana Highway. That being said, the bypass only ran from 1:00-6:30PM on Monday through Saturday. It did nothing to help alleviate mid day traffic jams or Sunday traffic jams that often occur during winter months when there is high surf. A&B recently turned the control of the bypass land over to the county. The county announced today that the bypass will be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week as of tomorrow. This should be a big help for those off hour back ups.
From a real estate and a mailing address standpoint, the communities of Spreckelsville, Paia and Kuau are lumped together under a single geography of Paia. While Spreckelsville may have had a Paia zip code, students living in this community were a part of the Kahului school district. The Maui Real Estate Team has learned that during the 2011-2012 school year, Spreckelsville students will now be part of the Paia school system. Elementary school students will now go to Paia Elementary. Middle school students to Kalama elementary and high school students to King Kekaulike.
