Alexander and Baldwin has prepared a draft environmental impact statement and submitted plans to the state land use commission as part of its initial efforts to get approval for a new development in North Kihei. The project would be located on a 94.3 acre strip of land along the Waiakoa Gulch close to the intersection of Pi’ilani Highway and the Mokulele Highway. The initial plans for the project call for 600 housing units. Their will be a mix of single family units, multi-family units, a small commercial district, green space, a park, bike paths and walking trails. The area is currently zoned agriculture, but the developer would like to have the area rezoned as urban. A and B has also indicated that they intend to meet county requirements for work force housing which would mean a minimum of 40% of the residential units would meet county affordable housing requirements. The developer has indicated they may even exceed requirements for this project to get credit towards other projects on the island.
The public is invited to comment on the draft environmental statement that representatives of A&B have prepared for the project. Copies of the draft are available at the Kihei, Kahului and Maui Community College Libraries and online via the Land Use Commission Website. Public comments should be sent to the land use commission with a postmark date of no later than November 23rd. The development is in the initial stages of the review process with review and public hearings in front of the land use commission, Maui Planning Commission and the County Council. We will continue to follow the review process for this proposed development on the Maui Real Estate Blog.
