South Maui offers something for everyone
South Maui features neighborhoods that suit a variety of lifestyles. Wailea is known for its luxurious gated communities and upscale homes with views of the ocean and golf courses. Makena offers luxury in a quieter setting. Kihei, in contrast, offers a more laid-back, beachy atmosphere, with condos and single-family homes near the beach. Ma’alaea is a smaller community of oceanfront condos and homes South Maui offers something for everyone. Both areas provide easy access to restaurants, shops, and outdoor activities.

While Kihei is a popular visitor destination and vacation rental condos, it offers a lot of appeal for year-round residents. The draw includes beaches, golf, restaurants, and other amenities. The other draw is a diverse inventory of housing. There are a large number of condo developments geared towards year-round residents, and a mix of homes ranging from entry-level to beachfront estates.
Luxury living in South Maui
Wailea and Makena are renowned for luxury living in a setting of tremendous natural beauty. Both areas offer stunning beaches and beautiful coastal waters with the green slopes of Haleakala rising above them. Wailea offers abundant resort amenities, including three golf courses, tennis/pickleball, shopping, and a variety of fine dining and less formal eating options. It offers a mix of home and condo living for residents and second-home owners. Makena is a little quieter without the resort hotels, but the homes in the community tend to be as opulent, if not more so, than their neighbors to the North. Makena Golf and Beach Club offers an option for those wanting Makena, but with more access to resort amenities.
A quiet oceanfront community
Ma’alaea isn’t a particularly big community. There are ten condo developments, about ten houses, the harbor, the aquarium, some shops, restaurants, and other amenities. That said, you never feel like you’re lacking in anything, because there are so many other attractions nearby. It is close to downtown Wailuku, Kihei, and the nearest community to West Maui on the east side of the Pali. All of the residential properties in Ma’alaea are located on the water. Ma’alaea condos include some of the lowest-priced oceanfront options on the island.
