Landscapes and Lifestyle

Upcountry Maui offers unique landscapes and lifestyles

Ask anyone the first thing that comes to mind when they think of Maui, and likely answers include surfing, beaches, or waterfalls. Rodeos, ocean view pumpkin patches, lunar-like landscapes, and rolling green pastureland are much less likely to roll off the tongue. Yet, those are all elements of life in Upcountry Maui. In other words, Upcountry isn’t typical Maui. Talk to a resident of Upcountry Maui, and they will extol the weather, the community, the views, and the lifestyle. Many wouldn’t want to live any other place in the world. And all the beaches and other beautiful elements of coastal Maui are still just a short drive down Haleakala. Living Upcountry gives you the best of both worlds.

Makawao

Makawao Town is Upcountry Maui's Paniolo Town

Makawao was a focal point for the island’s ranching industry. While cattle ranching doesn’t play quite the same role in the community today, it embraces its roots and still pays tribute to its “paniolo” (cowboy) heritage with its rodeo events. Makawao has a charming downtown with good restaurants, a couple of food trucks, shops, and galleries. Real estate options are varied. Entry-level homes are located on smaller lots near downtown and down the hill in Hali’imaile. More high end options can be found below town along Baldwin Avenue and above town in the community of Olinda.

Pukalani

Pukalani offers Upcountry convenience and amenities

Pukalani is located at roughly the same elevation as Makawao, just further to the south. It tends to be a little drier and sunnier due to its position on the volcano. The community has a number of amenities, including Upcountry Maui’s two grocery stores, an Ace Hardware, a golf course, and a community pool with stunning views. The Kulamalu area of Pukalani hosts the island’s largest Saturday Farmer’s market. Housing options vary from townhomes, to golf course homes and some impressive estates within the Kula 200 subdivision.

Kula

Big Upcountry Maui views from Kula

Kula spans a vast expanse of the western slope of Haleakala from an elevation of roughly 1,000 feet all the way up to over 4,000 feet. Its climate ranges from warm and sun-soaked at lower elevations to cool and misty at its highest elevations. It is a major agricultural hub on the island with ranch land, small flower and vegetable farms, and other agribusinesses. Housing inventory is just as varied as the climate. From smaller plantation era cottages in Keokea, to executive homes in Kulamanu, to larger estate properties, options abound. Due to its location, many homes have stunning views of Maui’s North Shore, South Maui coastline, neighbor islands, and the West Maui Mountains.
