Walkable Makawao

The Upcountry area is one of Maui’s more rural parts of the island. The community with the most established downtown area is Makawao. While not exactly urban living, owning a home near downtown Makawao comes with its advantages. You can walk to a number of local businesses and community amenities.

There are a handful of restaurants downtown including Casanova, Freshies, Polli’s Mexican Restaurant and Satori Maui. You can buy beer, wine, snacks and staples at Rodeo General Store. Downtown Makawao is home to one of the island’s three public libraries. There is a yoga studio and Eddie Tam park is located close to the center of town offering walking and running paths, youth sports, tennis and basketball. Makawao Elementary is just down Baldwin Avenue from downtown and Kalama Intermediate is not far from the center of town. There is a great Wednesday Farmer’s market just up the hill from town on Olinda Road.

Plain and simple, there is enough there and enough going on that living close to town could appeal to you if you appreciate walkability. The listings below are from the neighborhoods and streets that I am calling Walkable Makawao. They include neighborhoods such as Makawao Ranch Acres and the Meadows at Makawao. There are additional areas further South along Makawao avenue within walking distance of town. I excluded those areas due to a lack of sidewalk access.
