Whales Aplenty

This is just a quick post to tell everyone Whale season is in full gear here on Maui. I have some friends visiting from out of town and we headed over to West Maui yesterday for a little surfing at Launiupoko Beach Park. This place offers small waves that are ideal for those that are new to the sport. On our drive over, we were seeing frequent whale spouts. We continued to see the occasional whale while we were hanging out on the beach.

On our drive back to Paia, we stopped at a scenic overlook on the highway that connects West Maui to the rest of the island. This cliff side view point provides a great perspective on the waters between Maui, Kaho’olawe and Lanai. In addition to a spectacular sunset, we watched at least a half dozen different whale pods. Right as the sun set was starting to fade into twilight, a pod came within a few hundred yards of the overlook. While many whales had been spotted thus far, there were relatively few that had breached. The crowd at the overlook was imploring the whales to put on a show. The gentle giant must have heard us as a huge adult did a full breach as if on command. It made for a pretty memorable evening and a great sight for our out of town friends.
