The island of Maui is known to attract some of the best athletes in the world. Our ocean playground is a true testing ground for feats of athleticsm. This weekend, world class athletes will be taking to both the ocean and the slopes of Haleakala for the XTERRA World Championship. The XTERRA is an all terrain triathalon with a 1.5K swim, 30K bike and 11K run. The swim includes a 750 meter triangular course with a 50 meter beach run between laps. The bike starts roughly at sea level and features a series of climbs, peaks at approximately 1,500 feet of elevation and includes some tricky descents. The run is rugged with lava rock and lots of sand. It is a hot and grueling course.
The 500 competitor event culminates the XTERRA season and includes 34 participants from qualifying events from all over the world. The main event starts at 9:00 PM on Sunday, but there are a series of other events this weekend including a 5K and 10K run at 8:00 on Saturday. The race start and transition areas are based at the Maui Prince Hotel in beautiful Makena in South Maui. For more information, check out the XTERRA Race website. Good luck to all the competitors!
